Wiring a Defrost Timer
Step-by-step wiring guide for a standard electro-mechanical defrost timer on a walk-in freezer.
Overview
Electro-mechanical defrost timers switch the system between refrigeration and defrost cycles. Getting the wiring right is critical — a mistake can leave the evaporator frozen solid or the heaters on continuously.
Terminals
A typical 825-style timer has four terminals:
- 1 — Common (line in)
- 2 — Defrost heat / fan off
- 3 — Compressor + evaporator fan
- 4 — Neutral (some models)
Wiring steps
- Kill power and lock out.
- Land line supply to terminal 1.
- Run terminal 3 to the compressor contactor coil and the evaporator fan.
- Run terminal 2 to the defrost heaters (via the defrost terminator).
- Wire the defrost terminator in series with the heater circuit so the cycle ends early if the coil is clear of ice.
Common mistakes
- Swapping terminals 2 and 3 — the heaters run during the refrigeration cycle.
- Omitting the defrost terminator — heaters stay on for the full timer period regardless of ice, risking damage.
- Forgetting the fan delay after defrost, which blows warm air onto the product.
Always verify the cycle with a meter before walking away.
